667. TarbertTarbert is situated on a pretty slope overlooking one of the prettiest parts of the Shannon; from here the Shannon car ferry crosses to Killimer, County Clare, every hour on half-hour. The ferry service provides the opportunity for several attractive circular tours. The 20-minute crossing saves 85 miles (137 km) on the same journey via Limerick. Tarbert House, completed about 1730, has a fine collection of Georgian furniture, including the best example of an Irish Chippendale mirror. the house is open to groups by prior arrangement. 670. Valentia IslandValentia Island, a resort particularly popular with deep sea anglers. The island, about 7 miles (11km) long by 2 miles (3 km) wide, is one of the most westerly points of Europe. The surface is bold and rocky, two prominent features being Geokaun Mountain (880 feet) on the north and Bray Head (792 feet) on the south; both are splendid vantage points for the sightseer. About 9 miles (14km) off Valentia Island are the Skelligs Rocks. The Great Skellig, largest of the three, is an enormous mass of rock rising sharply out of the sea to more than 700 feet, On it are the ruins of a settlement built by early Christian monks: a small ancient church, a larger church of later date, two oratories, six beehive cells, several burial enclosures, crude crosses, and two wells. 671. VentryBeyond Dingle is Ventry, where you may see upturned Currachs (canvas covered canoes) on the beach. Follow the road marked Slea Head Drive round Ireland's most westerly point. The whole area is riddled with forts, souterrains, standing stones and crosses; you need a good detailed map to explore them all. On the hill-sides you will pass a number of strange little stone huts known as beehives or clochans. There are over 400 in the area altogether. Some farmers may charge you to visit these, and the more perfect specimens may have been reconstructed from the original stones as storage places (or for their more recent value as tourist attractions).
